Show reviews

We played the Falcon in Englewood last Friday night. It's a pretty sweet venue, comprised of a diner & stage on one side and a bowling alley and arcade on the other. Rock 'n bowl 'n food. Local band that I can't remember the name of right now opened. They were decent, kinda proggy in a way. Nice guys too. Super was on 2nd and came out and rocked it hard. Had a very nice turnout for the show. Headlining was the Detroit Cobras. Kinda cool music, but not all that dynamic. Met some cool people that run the venue and also met the folks from our publicity company as well. A big surprise was Charlie (the band's web master) and a friend flew out from Albany and surprised the band. On a funny note, there was a minor fight after the gig between some locals who were a bit on the dumb side and I think some Cobras fans. Was good for about 10 seconds of entertainment.

Saturday's show at the Aggie in Ft. Collins went over really really well despite some low numbers. Got to meet Oscar's brother who runs a coffee house nearby. Motohause Coffee. Pretty bad ass. So if you're in the Ft. Collins area stop in and check it out. Lots of new tunes being played at these shows, one of which will not leave my head. A Stones cover was also unveiled. After that I headed off with some friends while the band went up to Estes Park for a few days. I hear it's pretty much gorgeous up in those parts. So I helped out with my bud Ryan at his house that he's fixin up. Played some basketball down the road at a park. I think my body's still recovering. Felt really good though to get some excercise out in these beautiful parts of the country. Had a kick ass show Friday night at the Boulder Theater. Nice crowd turnout. Local band called Meniskus opened the show. Very good sounding band. Check 'em out.

Spent yesterday at Ryan's house for a cookout. The Rose Hill guys showed up and threw some 'shoes with us. Johnny introduced us to this game called Polish Frisbee. Fun times for sure. The band decided to spend an extra day in Boulder. Darn. So another wonderful meal at the Buff was had this morning with the best cafe breva I've head. Much love and thanks to Jacquie & crew. The day's gorgeous outside. Boulder kicks ass. Till later......

Boulder

Well, it's been a good trip out west again. Tonight we play the Boulder Theater with local band Meniskus and another band I can't remember what they're called. Should be dining at the Buff restaurant here shortly as well. For those of you not familiar with the Buff, it's by far the best breakfast/brunch place in Boulder. For that matter, I have yet to find a better place in the US, albeit with my mostly limited travels. Check it out here. The menu is fantastic and the service just the same.

Spent some time this week staying with a couple friends. The trade-off was I got to help paint a bedroom and waterproof a recently constructed fence in their backyard. They don't live too far from Pearl St.. It's about a 20 minute walk maybe. Ate at a few places along Pearl that I've not eaten at before, and had a few beers on a couple of the rooftop bars that provide a killer view of the Rockies. We attempted a game of 2-on-2 basketball at a park just down the road. When the press reports how lethargic and out of shape Americans are...we proved their point. We had to take a water break in between shooting around and shooting to see what the teams would be. Is that bad or what? Needless to say, many waterbreaks later and tons of lung biscuits later, the game reached it's end. And to make good on our recent athletic outings, we followed it up with a large New York-style pizza for dinner. Man was it tasty! More to come....

Downtime...

Was a good run of shows to start the month. The shows in Madison & Davenport had the Chicago-based Steepwater Band on the bill too. If you've never heard them, I suggest you remedy that right about now. The Chicago show at Martyr's was a great show, maybe the best of the first three. Great crowd despite the rather non-interesting first band. Super 400 played a stellar 45 minute set in front of what I deteremined as first-time-listeners. Definitely a great crowd response. Rose Hill followed with an ass-kicking set. Cody Dickinson from the North Mississippi All-Stars was there and came out and did a jammin washboard-wah jam with the band. I was a bit nervous when I saw this washboard backstage during the show, as I knew instantly who's it was. I turned around and he was sittin there talking and hanging out. Don't know why I got nervous, but I did.

After the Davenport show on the 3rd, it was back to Troy for a few days off. I stayed with Kenny & Lori. They've got a sweet house full of all kinds of goodies. I did the books for the past few short tours, and got all the merch organized and quantities documented as well. The band decided they were gonna cover Hendrix's "Little Miss Lover" for the next few dates. It's a killer song and they played it with a fury. The backyard of their house isn't really a yard...it's a damn waterfall. That's right...waterfall. Plus there's a firepit behind the garage for outdoor hangout space.

On the 8th, we made our way up to Burlington, Vermont. **note, as I'm writing this, I have a tiny cat nesting and snoring perched on my shoulder** On our way, we kinda got sidetracked and ended up having to cross Lake Champlain on a ferry. This lake is also home to the famed Champ, our version of Nesse. The show was at a great venue called Higher Ground. There are two concert rooms in the building, one significantly larger than the other. We played the smaller one and it turned out to be perfect. A band that we saw open for Big Head Todd called "The Brakes" opened up the show. They're a good band, but being first on the bill doesn't always draw the greatest of crowds. Super 400 came on around 9:30 and tore it up. Solid non-stop set. Then RHD followed and kicked the crowd's ass once more. Met some folks who were familiar with Super 400 there and talked to some people about setting up some street team stuff in that area. Wish we would have had more time to spend in the town. It's similar to Boulder, Madison, etc....college town + good beer + good music + skiing.

Next night was NYC at the Blender Theater on E. 23rd street. This is a top-quality theater with a professional sound system complimented with a professional lighting setup. Super 400 was first on the bill, followed by two more bands, then RHD. We managed to squeeze 10 more minutes for our set time and went on about 10 minutes till 9:00. Great set, great sound, good crowd response despite there only being about 30 people there. I worked merch the rest of the night and met many people who were friends of Super 400 & RHD. One person was Chris O. She's a wonderful person who I've traded music with on the Super 400, RHD, & Mule message boards. The Rose Hill set was as usual -- awesome. Got everything loaded out by 2:00. By this time, it was time for me to make my way to LaGuardia airport for my 6:00am flight. Said goodbyes to Kenny, Lori, & Joe and then to the RHD crew. Didn't want it to end. :(

So, back home now and working on promotions and other things. I'm reachable via cell, email, and Amber's phone if my phone doesn't seem to get service. Till the next time....

Troy

Hanging out here in Troy, NY right now. All of the dates so far have been really good. A few of the RHD shows and one Super400 show has been posted on etree so far, and hopefully more sources and the Redstone Room gig will be up soon. Don't know about the Madison shows.....there was a taper there but not sure if Super400 got recorded. I'm sure those will be surfacing very soon. One of the tapers came to all three shows. It's a family that loves taping Crowes shows and whenever Rose Hill comes to town. They're big Steepwater fans too, and I hope to see thier shows from Madison and Davenport up soon too. Both were kick ass sets.

Haven't have any time to put anything here yet, so this is my first chance really. I'm surrounded right now by albums of music's history, guitar and bass and recording gear all over the place, and a beautiful water fall. Really sweet pad up here. Next show is in Burlington on the 8th so we've got a few days to relax and kick back. I'll post more soon. Until then, I'm gonna do my best impersonation of Pippin, Gimly, and Merry. Till the next time.....
